A popular Chinese saying goes: The five grains provide nourishment. The five vegetables provide filling. The five domestic animals provide enrichment. The five fruits provide support.”

The core of this saying is about proper and balanced diet, one that you, a recovering mother, needs to take heed.

In general, eat a balanced diet which consists of protein-rich food, vegetables, fruits, grains and dairy. Protein-rich foods such as salmon, lean beef and legumes will keep you strong. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Fiber helps prevent constipation, which many women experience in the days after childbirth.

You may want to indulge after childbirth and consume your favorite junk foods. But a gentle reminder: limit your junk floods intake. Soda, donuts, french fries, cookies, donuts should never take the place of healthy food.

If you’re breastfeeding, avoid anything with alcohol. You are what you eat and drink, and what you drink gets into your system and into your breast milk. Breast Milk “tainted” with alcohol can harm your baby’s body and brain development. The same thing goes with caffeine which is found in many soft drinks, coffee, tea and chocolate.

Avoid these types of fish – -Swordfish, Shark, King Mackerel and Tilefish – – as they contain high levels of mercury, a toxin that can be harmful to your baby’s brain.

How about tuna? Limit consumption to 6 ounces of light tuna every week.

As you recover from childbirth, it is important to know that eating fresh food will help you recover faster than processed food.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners classify food according to three categories: yin (cooling), yang (warming) and neutral (neither cool nor warm). After childbirth, you will be advised to take something warm.

Why is that so?

A woman’s body loses blood when she gives birth. In TCM, blood is the life force, the warmth of it keeps you going. When you lose blood, you will feel cold which TCM experts refer to as the yin. To balance your qi, you need to eat food which will restore the warmth (yang) in your body.

Hence, eating the right kind and proper amount of food is crucial for mothers who are recovering from childbirth.

Ginseng, ginger, lotus seeds, goji berries and jujube dates are some of the herbs and fruits that are added to congee and soup for recovering mothers.

External application of essential oils such as chamomile, rose, lavender, apricot and mint can provide calmness and ease pain.

All these make postpartum recovery smooth and comfortable.
